Is Your Building Organised ...

AS 3745 recommends that an emergency procedures organization be established in commercial premises. Its purpose is to provide leadership and direction in the event of an emergency. The key elements of any emergency organization as it would be structured, are:

Building.

To coordinate the whole building one person needs to be designated as the Chief Warden. In the event that no permanent management personnel are available in the building, we would generally approach the largest tenant to provide this function. To assist the Chief Warden, and to deputise in their absence we would also look for two reserves or deputies.

Floors.

To coordinate each floor we would organize a warden team of approximately 5 personnel, being:

Floor Warden - to coordinate activity on the whole floor irrespective of tenancy. We would normally request the major tenant on each floor to provide the floor warden.

Reserve Wardens - to assist the floor warden and to deputize in their absence.

Stair Wardens - to coordinate movement at each fire stairs.

A typical organization is as shown below. This organization will be distributed within the building and copies will be forwarded to the building manager each time the list is updated.
